By Mrs Horton (Drama Teacher)
On Tuesday 30th April, the Drama Department took 37 Year 8 students to see a performance of The Kite Runner at the Oxford Playhouse. We took our seats in the auditorium with much anticipation of seeing an exciting and innovative piece of theatre. As the audience arrived, the stage was lit with a beautiful backdrop of what looked like tree trunks silhouetted against a sunset sky, downstage left was a spotlit man seated on cushions playing zerbaghali drums creating a vibrant and intoxicating atmosphere.
The play did not disappoint! We were absorbed by the powerful narrative exploring themes of redemption, reflection and the intricate architecture of Afghanistan’s recent history. The plot followed the life of a young boy growing up in Afghanistan, his daily struggles, and joys, leading him into adulthood with all the responsibilities that come with growing up. Both students and staff were mesmerised by the live musical accompaniment which was all through traditional Afghan instruments.
Our Year 8 students were wonderful ambassadors of BGS. They showed great attentiveness, empathy, and enthusiasm, embodying the spirit of theatre as a shared experience of emotions and reflection. This experience serves as a testament to the transformative power of the arts in shaping compassionate and culturally aware individuals.
