Mrs Martin (Head of Year 3, Science Coordinator)
Last week, BGS celebrated the connection between Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), with multiple engaging activities across the Junior and Senior Schools.
Our newly appointed Senior School STEM ambassadors joined the Junior School children to lead three space themed activities. The Lower Sixth and Year 9 girls were excellent in their ability to pitch the activities to the right level, for each group of girls.
Simultaneously, Mrs Crawford-Smith (Year 4 Teacher and ICT co-ordinator) launched the Duke of York iDEAs Award. This award aims to equip children with digital and enterprise skills. It enables them to access resources to inspire them to make, create, build and shine in a digital world. It was an inspiring way to start the week and everyone was engaged and excited!
Our next visitors to school were Lockheed Martin, a local division of the global security and aerospace company, who sent a team of STEM ambassadors to carry out an Egg Lander event. Girls were in small teams and were given an egg - they needed to design a landing craft, that was returning from the lofty heights of space. The teams had to design their pods, using their chosen materials, in order to best protect their egg. This was to model re-entry from space, as well as how different materials support different surfaces. The aim was to land the egg safely without breaking it! The girls showed valuable life skills in their execution of the task.
Using the latest VR technology, the Education Group visited the Junior School on Thursday and Friday, allowing whole class groups to simultaneously explore complex situations and visit outer space. There was much excitement as the girls launched into the galaxy and gained a deeper understanding of the solar system and its features.
Interspersed in this hugely varied and eclectic mix, were additional Science and Design Technology activities and a plethora of mathematical challenges organised by Mrs Copp (Deputy Head, Junior School).
