On Tuesday 19th September, the Physics Department took 86 enthusiastic Year 10 students to Cambridge for the annual Physics at Work exhibition at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge University.

The exhibition is run in a similar way each year, based upon interaction between active scientific researchers and students. This helps to inform and spread the excitement of modern physics research to students who will soon be making career and examination choices, and is a vital component in encouraging the next generation of scientists.

The workshops were designed to motivate and inspire students to study Physics beyond school, and to hear about the many Physics-related careers that are available to them.

Throughout the visit, each group had the opportunity to engage with six exhibitions hosted by various research groups within the Cavendish Laboratory and industry leaders such as Rolls-Royce Plc., Domino Printing Services and the AWE. The exhibits showcased an array of fascinating topics, including Nanoscience and photonics, materials science, hands-on demonstrations illustrating Newton’s Laws, scientific research in Antarctica, date printing on a variety of products, magnetic levitation, robotics and apprenticeships in Physics.

The students thoroughly enjoyed their experiences in Cambridge with many of them planning to study Physics A Level IB in the future.
