On Thursday 22nd March, we were delighted to welcome BGS alumna Alice Frost (2017), who is a first year medical student at the University of East Anglia.

Alice delivered a talk to the Medical Society about the importance of Problem Based Learning (PBL), which forms the basis of her course. Using an example from the topic locomotion and patients presenting pain in one joint, she explained that through group discussion her group of eight students were given medical cases to resolve and learn from through group discussion and independent study, which they presented back to the whole group.

Alice told the girls that she really enjoys the lively, interactive aspect of PBL whilst also developing the invaluable skills of communicating effectively in a group, working as part of a team and problem solving. She also feels that she is building on the critical thinking, reasoning and independent learning skills she started developing while studying the IB Diploma in Sixth Form.

The girls found the whole session fascinating and by the end, some wanted to find out more about this type of learning, whilst others found the concept of PBL challenging and would need to select a medical course, which aligns with their preferable educational development at university.
