The Lower Sixth biologists enjoyed a glorious and sun-filled day at Cople Fields on Thursday 22nd June. The International Baccalaureate (IB) students embarked on their IA (Internal Assessment) projects, carefully collecting data to investigate various research questions. These inquiries spanned from exploring the impact of light intensity on species richness in a deciduous woodland to examining the relationship between soil moisture and the distribution of Trifolium repens.
Simultaneously, the A Level students collaborated in small groups to gather data for an ecology core practical, an essential component of their practical endorsement.
Overall, it was a successful outing for the biologists, where they applied their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting, furthering their understanding of ecological concepts.
Lauren Whitlock (Lower Sixth) reflected: “Our day at Cople Fields was an excellent opportunity for us as students to take the lead in designing and carrying out our own ecology experiment, solidifying concepts discussed in the classroom with support from our teachers and peers. The day was made extra special by the lovely weather, a picnic on the grass and, perhaps most importantly, ice lollies at the end!”
