Senior School Rowing

By Miss Harris (Head Rowing Coach)

On Friday 24th March, the Oarsport Junior Sculling Head, fondly known as ‘The Scullery’, took place at Dorney Lake. This national event provides a platform for our aspiring young rowers to showcase their skills on the same course that hosted the 2012 Olympics.

Hundreds of crews from across the country completed two 1800m lengths, a real test of fitness and determination, with the fastest aggregated times taking the title. The size and scale of the event makes it fantastic to be involved in for participants and a great spectacle for supporters, especially when there are nearly one hundred octos (8x+) afloat.

For our Year 9s, this marked their inaugural race, following a frustrating head season marred by flooding. Despite these obstacles, we were impressed by how the rowers embraced the day, providing them with a positive introduction to the fun and exhilarating world of competitive rowing. Both the A and a B crew raced admirably, securing 12th and 4th in their respective categories. These are very promising results and set the stage for exciting prospects as we move into regatta season and aim for A and B finals.

Achieving a top 10 finish amongst a competitive field of nearly 60 crews was a fantastic achievement for our J15 A crew, while the B crew also secured a spot in the top 10 of their category.

Our senior quad (4x-) put in a brilliant effort for a squad that has only swept this season, and spirits were high amongst the crew.

Seeing all age groups working together, showcasing their camaraderie, support and encouragement, as well as the shared passion for the sport reminded us all how much of sport is about unity and collaboration, and not results. This year’s National head season competitions of The Scullery and Schools Head (raced on Wednesday) have contributed to BGS' most successful winter in recent years.
