We are incredibly proud of Emily Borner (Year 11), who was officially appointed First Sea Lord Cadet (CCF RN/RM) for 2025 at the Investiture Day onboard HMS Victory on Friday 31st January.
This historic occasion formalised Emily’s appointment and provided an opportunity to meet senior Royal Navy officers. Throughout the year, she will wear the distinguished No.1 uniform, signifying her role as a representative of the Royal Navy Cadet Force.
Emily, who is one of only three CCF Royal Navy cadets in the country to receive this honour, was presented with her certificates and badges in the Great Cabin onboard HMS Victory by the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Ben Key, KCB, CBE, ADC. His senior officers were present for the investiture, which took place in Nelson’s quarters. The cadets then enjoyed a private tour of HMS Prince of Wales in Portsmouth.
Being appointed First Sea Lord Cadet is one of the highest honours a CCF Royal Navy cadet can achieve. The selection process is highly competitive, with each CCF branch permitted to nominate only one cadet for consideration. Emily was nominated for her contributions, commitment and ability to inspire others. Throughout the year, she will represent Cadets at national events, attend high-profile occasions such as parades, ceremonies and ship visits, and support the future of the Corps.
Emily reflected on the day: “'The investiture day on Friday 31st January was an incredible day. First, meeting the First Sea Lord (the head of the Royal Navy) who presented my award onboard HMS Victory the oldest commissioned naval ship in the world (247 years old) and having the opportunity to speak to someone as inspirational and inspiring as him was surreal. Second, meeting other cadets that have the same interests and aspirations as me was amazing. We bonded over the navy on our tour of HMS Prince of Wales (the Flag Ship). Especially spending the weekend together completing ambassador training as Ambassadors of the Royal Navy Cadet Force. We took part in communication, presentation, and media training. However, my favourite was the dinner we hosted at RMR London.
“As President of the Mess, I oversaw making sure the evening ran smoothly, looked after our guests from the Royal Navy and held the responsibility of timings for the dinner and speeches. I can’t wait for the year ahead and I am so grateful for all the support I have had.”
CCF Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Mrs Milton added: “I am so proud of Emily’s achievements. The opportunities the role of First Sea Cadet will bring are endless. A huge honour for her and Bedford School CCF, congratulations and all the best for her forthcoming engagements.”
Emily’s appointment is a wonderful achievement, and we look forward to following her experiences in the year ahead.
