Debating with Purpose

Whole School

After our success in the first round in November, we headed to Denbigh School in Milton Keynes on Monday evening for round two of the English Speaking Union Schools’ Mace, one of the oldest and largest debating competitions for secondary schools in England and Wales.

Our team consisted of Mahdiyah Meghji (Year 11), Olivia Danks (Year 11) and Nawaal Qazi (Lower Sixth). They debated against a team from Bedford School, arguing against the statement that ‘Globalisation perpetuates social inequality.’

Only two schools out of the six that took part made it through to the regional finals and unfortunately our journey ended here, but the girls should be extremely proud of their effort and teamwork. All three students are taking part in the Model UN Conference this weekend, so we wish them the best of luck and look forward to hearing how they get on.

In the meantime, Debate Club are currently planning a KS3 debate competition with Bedford School and Bedford Modern School, which will give our younger students an opportunity to showcase their debating skills. This is set to take place in March, so stay tuned to hear how it goes!
