We are delighted for Emily Borner (Year 11), who has been appointed First Sea Lord Cadet (CCF RN/RM) for 2025, making her one of the top Royal Navy Cadets in the country.
A select number of cadets are chosen nationally from across the naval cadet forces (SCC, VCC, and CCF RN/RM) to serve as ambassadors. These cadets work to raise the profile of Naval Cadets while gaining unique insights into the senior levels of the Royal Navy.
Being appointed as a First Sea Lord Cadet is one of the highest honours a CCF Royal Navy cadet can achieve. The selection process is extremely competitive, with each CCF branch permitted to nominate only one cadet for consideration. Emily was nominated based on her outstanding contributions, commitment and exceptional leadership skills.
This prestigious role requires dedication, enthusiasm and the ability to represent fellow cadets with integrity; all qualities Emily demonstrated in her personal statement and through her Contingent Commander’s recommendation.
Emily will hold the position of First Sea Lord Cadet from 1st January 2025 to 31st December 2025. During this time, she will have the opportunity to attend events alongside senior members of the Armed Forces and Royalty, representing CCF RN/RM cadets at significant occasions.
A key milestone in her tenure will be the First Sea Lord Investiture Day onboard HMS Victory on Friday 31st January 2025. This historic occasion will formalise her appointment and provide an opportunity to meet senior Royal Navy officers. Throughout the year, Emily will wear the distinguished No.1 uniform, signifying her role as a representative of the CCF Royal Navy.
Emily’s achievement is a testament to her exceptional commitment and skill, as only three cadets across the UK receive this prestigious position.
Emily reflected on her selection: “I’m incredibly proud and honoured to have been selected as a First Sea Lord Cadet. The CCF has been an amazing journey for me, shaping my confidence and leadership skills while giving me a real sense of purpose. This role is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent my fellow cadets, work alongside inspiring leaders in the Royal Navy, and gain first-hand experience of the career I’ve always dreamed of. I’m excited for everything this year will bring, from meeting senior Navy officers and Royalty to going aboard warships and training with Navy personnel. It’s a privilege to be part of something so meaningful.”
Lt E Bassaly (Head of Section, Bedford School) added: “This is a massive achievement for Emily which is indicative of all of the hard work which she has put into CCF since she started in the Royal Navy Section in January 2023. Serving as one of only three 1st Sea Lord Cadets chosen from the whole CCF is a nationally recognised honour. We are so proud and excited to see what she will be able to get involved with over the next year!”
