Last year, Year 10 pupils Sabira Egan, Shreya Arun, Charlotte MacMahon and Prache Agrawal entered The National Engineering Competition for Girls.

The competition invites girls to solve the major challenges of the 21st century, to get creative, get thinking and most of all – have fun! There are cash prizes and engineering mentors provided for the winners of each category.

Shreya, Charlotte and Prache’s project investigated key issues surrounding world hunger. They attempted to develop a shipping container that would provide people with food and an area to grow their crops. Investigating solutions that were cost effective and sustainable worldwide, they came up with the idea of using water metal condensers and UV lights for a better environment for plants to grow. Sabira’s project investigated nuclear power and how to make it more efficient. As a result, she learned about the uses of nuclear energy; how it is used for electricity and about radioactivity.

Our girls did not win, but did receive a nationally recognised Bronze CREST Award for their efforts and are now inspired to go for the Silver Award.
