Bedford Girls’ School were out racing at a home race this weekend (Sunday 11th February 2018) on a very windy day on the Great Ouse. With quite a few girls, missing for various reasons this gave an opportunity for some of the girls to really shine. This was evident in the Year 9 girls section. These girls had all completed a PB (personal best) on the SI minute ergo (rowing machine test last week and were really excited to step forward and be counted.
It was great to see the new girls suddenly getting to grips with what this sport is about and enjoying seeing their hard work in training paying off. The Year 9 oct had a great first half to their race before catching a crab (an oar got stuck in the water) damaging the rigger and therefore being unable to finish. The good thing is they will be back to race again.
The first eight put down two healthy markers on their home water. These girls were racing in the open women’s category against quite a few Cambridge colleges. It was a great opportunity for the Senior girls some of them only fifteen racing against university crews.
The wind did cause the conditions to be particularly tricky in sections, which we are happy to say that all BGS crews managed to deal with remarkably well and this sets them up for the Schools Head next month on the Tideway Thames.
Junior Girl of the Match this week is going to go to the whole Year 9 quad of Tori Pinney, Emily Coton, Hannah Marchbank, Amy Wallington and Velvet Few-Weigratz for the tenacity they showed in racing down the course today passing two Kings Ely quads.
Senior Girl of the match goes to both Emily Greene and Megan Harris for competing in both eights and four meaning they both raced over the course three times.
Next, we move to Trent Head for the last opportunity before the Nationals.
