Senior School Rowing

By Miss Harris (Head Rowing Coach)

During the half-term break, it was fantastic to see a strong attendance from the rowers at the training sessions offered to them. These sessions offered a valuable opportunity to not only spend time discussing technique but also to put in some longer mileage sessions looking at how consistently they can replicate the quality. The final training session coincided with Halloween, adding a cheerful twist to the day. Coaches had fun decorating their bikes, and it was a delight to see rowers embrace the dress up and row in style. Among the spooky scenes, a creepy dentist took to the river alongside a boatful of witches cats.

To conclude the half-term, our Senior Squad (J16-J18) travelled to Henley-on-Thames to race on the iconic Henley Reach, one of the most renowned stretches of river in the rowing world. It was excellent to be at an event in the Thames Valley as some of the best student programmes are in the area. The conditions were great for rowing, although racing against the stream always makes the 3km course feel infinitely longer. Most rowers raced in both divisions, competing in a quad and a smaller boat - either a single or a double, which allowed them to put their training to the test, steer an unfamiliar river, and practise good race day nutrition and management.

Overall, it was a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Our J16 singles showcased some standout performances, with a one-two by Rosemary McGregor (Year 11) and Rosie Palmer (Year 11). Additionally, one of our J18 quads achieved a strong 3rd place finish, behind Henley and Tideway Scullers. The race weekend not only served as a competitive experience but also strengthened the bonds within the senior squad. It is clear that the rowers have made substantial progress over the last half term, building both their skills and their confidence as they head into their next block of training towards our national events of Head Season - the Scullery and Schools Head of the River Race.
