Sixth Form Mathematics

Rebecca Nisbet and Arielle Adams (Upper Sixth)

On Monday evening, BGS welcomed former Bedford School mathematician Mr Philip Coggins, who gave an illuminating talk to the Sigma Society.

This was well attended by girls from Years 11 to the Upper Sixth and proved to be a valuable opportunity to consider some surprising aspects of Mathematics, which we would not normally study in our lessons.

The first was a series of numbers which unexpectedly added to a multiple of pi which contrasted with a problem involving cylinders in which pi was not needed at all. The one thing that surprised us most were some geometric proofs, which we stayed afterwards to discuss and we found this linked with the current work we are studying in lessons. It was a very enjoyable and worthwhile session for all students.
