By Lauren Fraser (Lower Sixth)

On Tuesday 11th February, Lower Sixth students from Bedford School and Bedford Girls’ School led an important educational session for Year 9 girls on the topic of online sexual harassment. The session aimed to raise awareness about the dangers and challenges young people face in digital spaces, particularly regarding inappropriate messages, coercion, and the non-consensual sharing of images.

The Lower Sixth students facilitated interactive discussions, using real-life scenarios to help the younger students understand what online sexual harassment looks like, how to recognize red flags, and what steps to take if they experience or witness it. Topics included setting digital boundaries, the importance of consent, and strategies for staying safe online. They also emphasized the impact of online harassment on mental health and self-esteem, encouraging open conversations about these challenges.

By using a peer-led approach, the session created a comfortable and engaging environment where the Year 9 students could ask questions and share concerns. The event successfully empowered them with knowledge and practical tools to navigate online interactions safely. It also reinforced the importance of seeking support from trusted adults, friends, or school resources when facing issues related to online harassment.
