Mrs Howlett (Deputy Head of PE)
On a beautiful and perfect Wednesday afternoon for sport, our talented athletes were thrilled to hit the fast and challenging cross country trails at Sharnbrook Upper School. It was the first race since January 2020 and the first for many of our younger runners.
Racing against the very best runners from North and Mid Bedfordshire, the BGS athletes were also vying for qualifying spots to represent the school & North Bedfordshire in the County Round event, which will be held at Ampthill Park in two weeks. BGS entered three different age groups - U13 (Years 6 and 7), Junior Girls (Years 8 and 9) and the Inter Girls (Years 10 and 11).
The ground was really quite soft underfoot which made it tricky going in places. The course was undulating with a mix of terrains, which challenged all the runners involved. All the BGS athletes shone on the day and everyone should be extremely proud of themselves. The fact they put themselves forward to run in such a tough event in the first place says a lot about their character and physical fitness. The effort shown on the course was commendable.
Those who have qualified to run at the County Finals will be representing North Beds and BGS, and will also have the chance of gaining selection to represent Bedfordshire at the National Championships if they finish in the top sixteen in the County race.
An amazing 17 BGS students qualified to compete in the County Finals; see the full results below.
