During the week commencing 17th March, BGS launched its first-ever Tech Week, a fun-filled and inspiring celebration of technology and its growing impact on our world. With a packed schedule of events, Tech Week aimed to spark curiosity, build digital skills and hopefully begin a new annual tradition.
As technology continues to shape our future, digital literacy has never been more important. 92% of jobs already require digital skills, and that number is only rising. Whether or not students pursue careers in tech, understanding the role of technology in society is essential. Tech Week offered a chance to explore, ask questions and maybe even discover a new passion.
We kicked off the week with an inspiring talk from alumna Louise Gale (DAHS 2009), a materials engineer at Rolls-Royce Aerospace. Louise, who studied at the University of Cambridge and holds a Master’s degree in Science, shared insights into her work in research and development. Her talk was followed by a lively Q&A session, where students asked thoughtful questions and gained a deeper understanding of careers in engineering and tech.
On Tuesday 18th March, students enjoyed immersive Virtual Reality experiences in the LRC. From time-travelling in a DeLorean to walking on Mars, the sessions were hugely popular and allowed students to experience cutting-edge technology first-hand. Deeksha Dinesh (Upper Sixth) reflected: “The VR experience was fabulous, and as a Year 13 student, I believe the marvel of VR appeals to people of all ages! I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to the past and the future with the beauty of technology.”
Midweek, we ran a fast-paced and challenging tech-themed scavenger hunt. Students teamed up to solve puzzles and unlock clues through a series of digital challenges. The final task involved cracking a tricky ASCII code, testing their critical thinking under pressure! The winning team was rewarded with a well-earned Easter egg.
To round off the week, students and staff were treated to a special tech-themed lunch menu in the dining hall. The cleverly named “phish and chips” proved to be a favourite!
Tech Week was a fantastic success, with high levels of engagement across the school. We hope to see it return as an annual event, continuing to celebrate the importance of technology in shaping our future, both in and beyond the classroom.
