Many congratulations to BGS alumna Holly Smith (2021), who alongside her team, won the prestigious Varsity Hockey crown on Sunday at the Southgate Hockey Centre.

Representing the University of Oxford, the team claimed a 2-0 victory against the University of Cambridge in a closely fought contest.

We spoke to Holly about this historic sporting occasion, she said: “The atmosphere surrounding the match was incredible from the moment we walked onto the pitch, and it was fantastic to have so many supporters. The game itself was very high intensity - the first half was particularly tense and ended 0-0. We managed to take it up a gear in the second half to finish with a 2-0 victory!

“Cambridge fought hard and were a tough opposition, so it was great to see all our hard work pay off; and as a defender, keeping a clean sheet really topped it off.  The whole day was an amazing experience and I’m very lucky to be part of a team of such great hockey players and friends.”

Holly is currently reading Geography at Keble College, Oxford and represented Bedford Hockey Club last season in the National League.

An inspiring role model for all our hockey players, BGS and the wider community are very proud of Holly’s achievements.
