Walking for UWS

Whole School Community

On a autumnal Sunday morning, a dedicated team of 19, comprising students from Years 9 and the Sixth Form and staff set out to walk 10 miles as part of fundraising for our international charity, United World Schools (UWS).

The global charity provides children in remote communities in Cambodia, Nepal. Myanmar and Guatemala access to a quality, inclusive education.

Part of our school ethos is for the BGS community to connect and engage to make a difference to the world around us. BGS and UWS values are aligned in terms of the importance of education for girls and the value they place on growth, sustainability and investment in people.

Siri Chukka (Year 9) reflected on the fundraising walk: “In order to raise funds and awareness for the many children who have to face the struggles of walking miles to school every day, we walked an adventurous route to Willington and back, covering about 10 miles in all.

“The rough and bumpy paths definitely tested many of us who almost fell due to the slippery mud. However, unlike children who trek long distances to school, we had a chance to enjoy some hot chocolate at the Danish Camp. Not only was this an enriching experience for us, it was also a chance to realise just how privileged we are and to do our part in supporting others who are not as fortunate.”

A huge thank you to our fantastic staff - Mrs Arrowsmith, Mrs Axford, Mrs Bezzer and Miss Dawson who accompanied the students. The final total of funds raised was £826!
