Sixth Form Performing Arts

By Mr Stratton (Director of Drama and Dance)

On Tuesday 13th June, our Lower Sixth A Level Drama cohort completed the first assessment which will contribute to their final grade. The students were tasked with responding to a stimulus and devising a piece of original theatre that applied the methodologies of an influential practitioner.

The stimulus chosen was an extract from the renowned play, Top Girls by Caryl Churchill.; a play which explores themes such as: women under the patriarchy; women's stories' motherhood and power vs success. The students worked in small groups and for a number of weeks in preparation for the assessment, spent time practically exploring the work of a range of practitioners, different styles of theatre and the themes of the play - the work was dynamic and ambitious, setting a solid foundation for the beginnings of their final pieces.

The students worked tirelessly and with resilience throughout the creation and rehearsal period and together created three ambitious costume designs, two excellent pieces of theatre and one creative lighting design.

The entire finished product was powerful and polished - yet another standout performance created by BGS students!
