On Tuesday 12th November 2024, our Lower Sixth Mathematics students had the exciting opportunity to visit the University of Warwick for a series of talks organised by Education in Action. This enriching trip brought together A Level and IB Diploma learners to explore mathematics beyond the classroom through engaging talks from industry professionals, academics, and expert communicators.
The sessions covered a diverse range of topics, including statistics in engineering, data science applications, and pure mathematics. A particularly valuable segment focused on exam strategies, offering practical hints and tips to help students improve their grades.
It was inspiring to see our students discover how mathematics intersects with so many fields and careers, gaining fresh perspectives on the subject they are so passionate about.
Holly Blewitt and Minnat Raheem said: “We enjoyed attending the Maths in Action trip as it gave us new insights into careers in both maths and physics. The talks were very informative and interactive, with the amazing speakers giving the audience the opportunity to vote, ask questions, and win prizes such as £20 or a Freddo! We also found the exam technique talk helpful, even though our exams are some time away.”
Rihana Sultana added: “The Maths in Action trip was very exciting and helped give me a new perspective on maths, specifically how deeply it is incorporated into our daily lives. My favourite lecture from that day was by Colin Wright, who talked about how all combinatorial games were linked to Nim. I found the talk really engaging as I learned the strategies behind the game and more about binaries. Overall, this trip has made me more interested in studying maths throughout Sixth Form and doing further research on it.”
