Take yourself back to the beginning of March; the launch of the Campaign Challenge saw the Lower Sixth students starting to work in small groups on social issues they felt passionate about. With the lockdown restrictions looming during this period, many of the campaign events at school had to be postponed. Shreya Arun, Sabira Egan, Loire McBreen, Nikeisha Patel, Marisa Mistry and Reem Shah's campaign was called Our Skin Matters, inspired by Sabira’s own experience of suffering from eczema, focused on looking after your skin and the difficulties faced by people with visible differences. The girls presented an interesting and thought provoking campaign assembly to their audience.
Sabira (now Upper Sixth), continued to create awareness of eczema during the lockdown period. In conjunction with the charity, Changing Faces, Sabira shares her personal story of living with eczema, a skin condition she has struggled with all her life, she said: “I have struggled with eczema all my life. When I was younger, my parents wrapped me in bandages to stop me itching. During the early years of school, eczema on my hands would make it difficult to write as I simply couldn’t stop itching and teachers had to encourage me not to itch! Read her story here.
Miss Dawson (Biology Teacher and CAS Coordinator), said: “The Campaign Challenge project in the Lower Sixth offers our students an opportunity to speak out about an issue that they feel passionate about. Sabira’s group campaign Our Skin Matters has allowed her to share her experiences and will hopefully help others feel more confident in a similar situation. I am extremely proud of Sabira for stepping out of her comfort zone in order to support others.”
We are very proud of Sabira in creating further awareness of eczema, an often misunderstood skin condition.
