Mr Mason-Mcleod (Acting Director of Sport)
Whilst the rest of us have been in lockdown, BGS sporting superstars have continued to excel. Karis Nesbitt-Hadaway (Upper Sixth) has been made captain of the Wasps Netball U19 Academy team and was selected to attend the England Netball Roses Academy Long Squad Camp.
Florence Miller, our new Sports Captain (Lower Sixth), has been selected to be part of Sunrisers Cricket Academy. Florence is part of the 14 women squad. The purpose of the Academy is to develop talent within the region and to produce players for the Sunrisers Senior Team and the England Women’s Pathway and they hope that a number of these girls are able to make that step up in the coming years.
Maddie Axford (Upper Sixth) has been selected for the Great Britain Elite Development Programme (EDP) for 2021. First formed for the 2017/18 season, the GB EDP is funded by UK Sport and designed to provide players who have the potential become Olympic medallists of the future the best possible opportunity to achieve their international hockey ambitions. The GB EDP is made up of players from all of the Home Nations, while the England U21 programme is embedded within it.
Good luck to Roisin Scanlon (Year 8) with her golf this summer. Roisin is currently ranked 5th best U14 girl in Europe.
Etienne Maughan (Year 11) and BGS alumna Rebecca Murray (2013) returned to the track with fantastic early-season performances for Bedford and County AC. Rebecca competed in the ‘comeback’ 5000m at Battersea Park, finishing third in the women’s race, in 16:28.18. At the same meeting, Etienne ran her second-fastest 100m in 12.02 to finish 4th out of 8 in a race, she also clocked 25.27 over 200m.
Meanwhile read in the Senior School section of the Edit about Harri Scarr’s (Yr 7) impressive selection to Wales Dragon Lacrosse Academy.
Finally, it is great to watch Miss Huckle (Head of Netball) play for Wasps in the Netball Superleague. In her last match v Severn Stars, Miss Huckle was voted Player of the Match.
