On Friday 18th June, students from Years 10 and the Lower Sixth took part in a virtual Model United Nations Conference (MUN) hosted by St George’s British International School in Rome and also attended by The Lady Elizabeth School in Alicante. In MUN students debate current issues and do this in committees (as per the United Nations) each with a different topic and from the perspective of a country whose views they represent as the country delegate. The countries that our students represented were Bangladesh, France, Greece, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Palestine, The Philippines and the USA. The five committees and their topics were:
- The Security Council – political solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
- The Historical Security Council – the Cuban missile crisis
- The Environment Programme – measure to ensure sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources
- UNHCR – how to aid the humanitarian situation in Palestine
- ECOSOC - measures to promote economic recovery in the post-COVID era)
To be able to successfully take part and contribute to the discussion a lot of research prior to the event was required. Using this the students wrote a position paper, outlining their country’s views on the topics and presenting them at the start of the conference. All the BGS students were actively involved in the debating and worked collaboratively to build resolutions that outline how these issues can be addressed. While all our students should be congratulated on their contributions, special mention needs to be made to the following for winning awards in their committees.
- Manal Husain - Best Delegate (Nigeria Human Rights)
- Masooma Sultana - Best Speaker (Palestine Security Council)
- Sumaiyah Kuthubriya - Honourable Mention (France Security Council)
- Eleanor McNulty - Honourable Mention (USA Environment)
- Cecilia Kilpatrick - Best Position Paper
