Thursday 9th September saw the return of the BGS Current Girls’ v BGS Old Girls’ match at Cople Fields. Hosting our first large scale sporting event since the pandemic certainly felt very special and it was so lovely to see a huge number of families and staff come and enjoy what was a very thrilling and exciting game.
For the majority of students this was their first competitive match for over 18 months but there was certainly no dust on any of the sticks in action! There were plenty of goals but the magic moments of the game were certainly from both goalkeepers, current girls Kierra Saloma (Lower Sixth) and Maisie Robson (Year 11), who were outstanding throughout the match. Other stand out performances came from Holly Smith (2021) whose ability to intercept a pass from anywhere was particularly frustrating for the current girls who were trying to pass the ball into attack. Maddie Axford (2021 and former Sports Captain) showed her class throughout the game and was a particularly tricky customer to mark.
The final score was 11-4 with the Old Girls’ claiming victory. Kierra Saloma was awarded the Joan Gibson Player of the Match Award for her impressive saves and a zero-fear approach to stopping balls that were travelling at seriously high speeds!
The atmosphere at Cople was just wonderful and it really felt like our school community was connected again after such a long time away from the sidelines. We are really looking forward to welcoming you again at our inaugural Alumnae v Current Girls’ Hockey match and Netball match in memory of the late Sarah Raven (née Fisher 2004) on Sunday 27th March 2022.
Thank you to all of the Old Girls’ who attended the game both in a playing and supporting role. Keep in touch and we hope to see you again soon.
