“Kinder than is necessary. Because it’s not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.” Wonder by R. J. Palacio

In Year 7, we are focusing on being kind, both to ourselves and to others. The week began with an inspiring assembly by Mrs Cruse (Head of Years 7 and 8) which zoomed in on thought-provoking quotations from the book Wonder by RJ Palacio: the tale of ten-year-old August Pullman who has to navigate the world with a genetic syndrome which affects his facial features.

On Thursday, 7GJP completed a kindness relay race where teams competed to fill up a sheet of paper with compliments. Students were asked to write a compliment to themselves, rather than to a peer, in order to establish a culture of embracing and loving yourself, inside and out. Amongst some of the compliments, one student wrote: “I love how happy I am.”

We are going to be working on establishing positive affirmations like this as part of Monday’s Mindfulness Club (M119, second lunch) and students across all year groups are welcome to attend.
