England’s brightest golf prospect, Roisin Scanlon (Year 9), is continuing her rise in the women’s game with an incredible start to the season at the Scottish Girls' Under 18s Championship (6th-8th April) at the Irvine Golf Club.
Competing against older golfers, the 14 year old student placed 3rd overall, with fellow English golfer, Rachel Gourley securing first place, followed by Germany’s Philipa Gollan. Roisin’s incredible performance placed her 1st in the U16 category, ahead of France’s Juliette Demeaux.
After the win, Roisin said: “It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride this week in the wind and sun and rain, but I’m excited to win. I’m still only 14, but have been playing in these events for a while now without ever winning. I was always aspiring to get to this point and it really means a lot to me to take this prize. It’s nice to have a win under my belt and to take the confidence forward from the week.”
Next on Roisin’s busy golf schedule was the prestigious R&A Girls U16 Amateur Championship, which took place at Enville Golf Club (22nd – 24th April). A leading event for up-and-coming female golfers, Roisin placed 2nd in this event in 2021. With winds up to 30mph playing conditions were very difficult. In the first 2 rounds Roisin had some swing issues which affected her scoring and found herself in 31st place going into the final round. In the final round with some swing adjustments, Roisin shot the 2nd lowest score of the day moving her up to finish 17th overall in a strong international field. It wasn’t the result Roisin was looking for but is looking forward to having another go at winning the title next year.
Many congratulations, Roisin! We look forward to following your incredible golf career.
