Many congratulations to Head Swimming coach, Mr Castro, who added a gold medal to his growing international honours at the 2022 Europe Triathlon Championships in Olsztyn, Poland on Sunday 29th May.

Mr Castro placed 1st in the 30-34 standard distance category (overall time of 02:03:05). Over 190 age group athletes represented the Great Britain Age-Group Teams at the European Standard Distance Championships in Poland, where over 60 years separated the youngest and oldest competitor representing Great Britain. The GB Age-Group Teams included a wealth of experience, including athletes who have had success at European Championships before over the standard distance.

We spoke to Mr Castro about the championship, he said: “This was the first international race I had competed in for three years. During this time training had been very inconsistent, no races and closed swimming pools - didn’t support a great training environment. Going into this race, I was a little unsure about my level of race readiness. The water was clear and not too cold and the cycle was mainly on very smooth dual carriageways which made very fast cycling conditions.

“The run is still an area for development, I was being caught all the way to the finish but managed to hold on. I am now looking forward to the World Championships in Abu Dhabi (23 - 26 November 2022) later in the year. Hopefully by then my running will be in a better place.”

An inspiring role model to all students, BGS and the whole community are extremely proud of Mr Castro’s achievements.
