Mr Stretton (Classics Teacher)

Not only did the Years 9 and 10 Latin students go in search of Roman artefacts as we headed off for a beautiful morning at Verulamium Park in St Albans, but they also accidentally discovered some authentic Roman weather!

Despite the heat, students explored a multitude of Roman artefacts from ruined walls to beautiful mosaics as we toured round the Verulamium Museum, the Park and the nearby Roman Theatre.

Students were given a mission to find artefacts which interested them - a mission to which they responded magnificently as they found (and were fascinated by) rejected roof tiles ruined by pet paw prints and tiny detailed engravings the Romans used as signatures (among many many other things).

Serena Jacob (Year 10) said: “I really enjoyed this trip, and it was amazing to see the objects that many Romans used daily. I found it really exciting to see a plethora of different artefacts which will be incredibly helpful for my GCSE’s next year.”

The trip ended in a shaded picnic beneath the trees in the park as we wondered what happened on that very spot 2000 years ago.
