Following interviews with Change the World Model United Nations (CW MUN) during the summer break, we are delighted to announce that Sarah Mehrez (Year 11) has been offered a place at an international Model United Nations (MUN) in Singapore 2023.
MUN is a form of debating club which replicates the structure used within the United Nations. Students assume the role of a delegate or representative for a particular country, and work with delegates from other countries to identify solutions to global issues such as renewable energy, the refugee crisis, and food security.
Sarah reflected on her selection for this prestigious event: “I first found out about MUN through the school club and was immediately intrigued. I really enjoy public speaking and have always been passionate about debating global issues with others. In June, I had the opportunity to apply to participate in an international MUN course in Singapore, with a company called CW MUN.
“I attended a virtual interview and they asked me various types of questions such as if I consider myself to be someone who can understand and accept opposing points and ideas to the ones I may put forward, and not be discouraged during the process. I was also asked to consider what global issues I may want to raise during the conference, and I was told that this was because we were putting forward ideas during the conference, and then debating the most relevant idea to the modern world today.
“I was very proud to receive the news that I had been accepted into the program and that next summer, I would be going to Singapore to compete with other people from around the world, and experience new and more intense forms of debate. I am really looking forward to going and mastering skills of intrinsic value in debating; the confidence to speak in public, the construction of a logical argument, and most importantly, the willingness to hear others' arguments, and to respond to them accordingly.”
