It’s been a busy start to the Autumn term for our Green Kitchen and Grounds teams who have created a herb garden located near the entrance of the Green Room.
The raised bed will provide the Green Kitchen access to fresh, locally-sourced and sustainable produce which will be used in the school meals.
Mrs Tombs (Deputy Catering Manager) said: “Our Sous Chef Mr Clark came to me with a request to start growing our own herbs. After placing our daily food orders for our fresh produce, it struck me how much herbage we buy into school each week; I worked out we were often buying in excess of 30 bags a week, often more. Looking at the delivery each bunch was wrapped in plastic, had at least one rubber band holding the herbs together in a bunch and taking in to account the distance these herbs would have travelled from being picked to arriving with us, it seemed a no brainer to get a place in the school to create the Greens Herb Garden.
“After speaking with our Head of Grounds, the plans were put in place and in no time at all we had a beautiful raised bed planted with the kitchen's favourite herbs plus a few unusual ones to challenge the team to incorporate them in the menu.”
