Following his gold success at the European Triathlon Championships in Olsztyn, Poland during spring, BGS Head of Swimming, Mr Castro, added a bronze medal to his growing international honours collection at the World Triathlon Championship Finals on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island.
Mr Castro placed third in the 30-34yr standard distance category with an overall time of 02:00:52, achieving the fastest swim and the second fastest bike of his age category. In eight World Triathlon Championships, Mr Castro has stood on the podium an impressive seven times. You can view his full results here.
Mr Castro reflected on his performance: “I was always a little nervous of how I was going to perform in the heat of Abu Dhabi, I managed to finish, but only just on the run!
“The races started in the bath-like temperature water of Yas Island Bay trying to avoid the huge jellyfish. I swam well, achieving the fastest swim time! Next it was time to hop on the bike and on to the 40km course passing many of Abu Dhabi's iconic venues including the F1 track and Ferrari World. I managed to put together one of my fastest ever bike legs averaging 26 mph and was the 7th fastest cyclist on the day. I started the run in good condition however at half way the 32’C heat started to take its toll. The last 5k was a struggle to the finish line but I managed to hold on for the bronze medal.”
Inspiring to all our students, BGS and the wider community are extremely proud of Mr Castro’s achievements!
