Creative Taster Day

Whole School Art & Textiles

On Wednesday, our Year 8 students got their creative juices flowing in the various Art and Technology departments.

The taster day gives the young creatives the opportunity to explore the different subject options (Art & Textiles, Design Technology, Food & Nutrition) to choose in Year 9.

It was a busy day across the Art and Textiles department, with many creative workshops taking place. In Textiles, students had the opportunity to explore developing fashion drawing, with designs being highly creative, investigating frills and flounces, colour and texture. The Art session saw students exploring the theme of identity, by taking a number of portrait photographs and collaging with them to investigate composition, scale and mood. Students approached these tasks with real creativity, and the resulting work was super.

During the Design and Technology sessions, the cohort explored Computer Aided Design to create their own acrylic phone stands. The students used their CAD knowledge to manipulate images, measure accurately and explore different material areas to enable them to create their own final design. Super well-done Year 8, your phone stands look amazing!

There were delicious delights in the Food and Nutrition department! The students each made a lemon meringue pie with a focus on food science. Have you ever wondered why you can’t make meringues if you get any egg yolk in the whites? How do we get the pastry to have a lovely short, crumbly texture and what makes the filling set, without going lumpy? The young chefs worked quickly and used a variety of different skills and pieces of equipment; many of them were able to pipe their meringue topping to finish it off to a high standard. We hope they are all proud of what they have achieved as this is a very challenging dish to make in Year 8.
