On Tuesday 3rd October, 6 Year 11, 34 Lower and 7 Upper Sixth Formers participated in the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge in the Main Assembly Hall. The Mathematical Challenge is a 1.5-hour, 25 question multiple choice paper and aims to stimulate mathematical problem solving. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The questions on the paper are designed to challenge students to think, not to guess. No calculators allowed!
An example of a question on this year’s paper is:
The students had a chance to get a bronze, silver or gold certificate if they were in the top 66% of the UK from all those students taking the challenge.
Twelve students achieved a bronze certificate, eight got a silver certificate, and two were awarded a gold certificate. Moksha Sunkara was awarded the best in Year 11 with a silver award, Alicia Hui was the best in the Lower Sixth with a gold award, and Mia Krnic in the Upper Sixth was the best in school with a gold award. Mia and Alicia are qualified for the next round - The Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo. A big congratulations to all these mathematicians!
