Our Senior School swimmers enjoyed a spot of warm weather training in the beautiful surroundings of Lanzarote during half term.
The students swam every day in an Olympic sized outdoor swimming pool and improved upon their already excellent swimming skills. That said, it wasn’t all hard work as the students also visited a waterpark and enjoyed all the facilities in the luxurious Club La Santa resort.
Upper Sixth students Izzy, Lucy and Eleni reflected about the fantastic swimming camp: “During the second week of half term a group of Years 7-Upper Sixth BGS swimmers travelled to Club La Santa in sunny Lanzarote.
“The resort facilities were outstanding and gave us access to an open-air Olympic sized 50m swimming pool and plenty of other sports activities. We completed 2 x 2-hour training sessions a day followed by an evening activity such as volleyball, mini golf, padel or tennis.
“In the morning sessions we focused on technique work, working on a different stroke each day. This allowed each of us to develop our skills to improve our overall speed for future races and galas. The afternoon sessions were more physically challenging, based on improving threshold endurance and aerobic capacity.
“Swimming four hours a day meant we all had big appetites! Fortunately, a highlight of Club La Santa was the all you can eat buffet which included a wide variety of delicious foods from different cuisines, there really was something for everyone - particularly the desserts!
“We were very fortunate that Mr Castro (Head of Swimming) scheduled an afternoon off for some fun time at the local waterpark!
“We all agree that this was an incredible week which we will remember very fondly. It was especially poignant for the Upper Sixth as it was our last swim camp with school - and for some of us, our last BGS trip.
“I’m sure the rest of the group will join us in saying a massive thank you to Mr Castro, Miss Gray (Head of Years 10 and 11) and Miss Spong (Swimming Coach) for such a fantastic week!”
