On Saturday 2nd March, the BGS lacrosse teams competed in a series of fixtures at Haberdashers' Girls' School (Habs) at Cople Fields. With torrential downpours the day before and some of the wettest pitches for many years, the standard of lacrosse and the attitude from all involved was truly incredible and was also great preparation for the First and Second teams ahead of the National Schools Lacrosse competition which starts on Saturday 9th March.
Highlights included a thrilling clash with the BGS U19B team starting strong in a match that showcased the passion and skill of both teams. The conditions were difficult; Habs demonstrated resilience in defence, making it challenging for BGS to secure an early lead. Despite the hard work, we fell to Habs in the end. A special mention to Adeyemi-Abere (Upper Sixth). Faith’s speed, relentless determination, and overall work rate were a massive asset to the 2nds.
The U15B team started strong; the midfield battles were intense, with players from both teams showcasing impressive stick skills and strategic plays. The spectators were treated to a display of fast-paced lacrosse, with each possession holding the potential for a game-changing moment. Mrs Mason-Mcleod (Director of Sport) gave an inspiring team talk centred on her belief in this team’s ability to succeed at National Schools. The final score was 8-1 to BGS. Our standout player was Jette Schreyer (Year 10) who has made significant progress with her lacrosse this term only starting the sport in Year 9.
The U14A fixture was very competitive with intense midfield battles, and the goalkeeper skills on both sides were put to the test as shots on goal became more frequent. Habs started to pull ahead with some unanswered goals. Mrs Lombard (PE teacher) summed it up well by saying that on a different day, with our full team, they would have struggled to beat a team as good as us. Habs won this fixture 7-4. A huge well done to Caitlin Gill who stood out in the fixture with her consistency.
The U12B team fixture kicked off with an immediate display of determination from both sides. The pitches were very soggy after a hard morning but the sun had come out by round 4. BGS showcased exceptional teamwork and ball control, setting the tone for a competitive encounter. Mrs Smith (PE teacher) made reference to how proud she was of the journey the U12’s had been on in their first season. Well done to Poppy Down, who was outstanding in defence.

U19A: BGS 3 v 8 Habs, U19B: BGS 3 v 7 Habs and U19C: BGS 2 v 10 Habs.
U15A: BGS 5 v 4 Habs and U15B: BGS 8 v 1 Habs.
