During the month of Ramadan, many Muslims around the world fast from dawn until sunset. At the time of breaking fast, families and communities come together for Iftar, the evening meal at when the fast is broken with delicious and copious dishes.
In this spirit, members from across our wonderful community gathered for a memorable BGS Iftar on the evening of Wednesday 20th March. Organised by The Association (PTA), the Islam Society, staff and the Green’s Kitchen team, all guests (whether fasting or not) gathered in the Dining Hall to celebrate the breaking of the fast together.
The evening started with wonderful performances and recitals. For the first time this year Bel Canto performed as part of the celebration a specially arranged version of the traditional Arabic song Tala'a Al-Badru 'Alayna. This song holds deep cultural and historical significance, dating back to the time of Prophet Muhammad. It was sung by the inhabitants of Medina to welcome the Prophet upon his arrival from Mecca, symbolising peace, joy, and unity.
Mr Keating-Roberts (Director of Music) explained: “Exploring the Arabic language through this song was an enjoyable and enriching experience for our choir members. With support from Arabic speaking students Bel Canto had delved into the meaning of the lyrics, which express gratitude for the blessings brought by the Prophet's arrival and invoke blessings upon him. The rhythmic melodies allowed the whole audience to appreciate the beauty of Arabic music and language, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures.”
It was wonderful to hear students and our guest speakers share their personal reflections on Ramadan and the significance of Iftar. For many, Ramadan is not only a time of fasting but also a period of spiritual growth, self-discipline, and acts of charity. Each story shared provided insight into the diverse experiences and perspectives within our community, fostering empathy and understanding among all attendees.
Mrs Thomas (Chair of The Association) reflected on the event: “What a glorious celebration it was. Special thanks to the Islam Society for the wonderful songs, prayers and presentations. Thanks to the Green’s Kitchen Team for supplying us with delicious curries and to all the people who brought wonderful food to the event, it really was a feast of exceptional flavours. You are all very much appreciated. And the biggest thanks of all to Miss Choudhury (Junior School Teaching Assistant) for all her hard work in pulling this event together yet again.”
