Whole School

On Saturday 9th November, four of our students took to the skies in a thrilling introduction to gliding at RAF Syerston, home to the RAF Central Gliding School and training hub for the Volunteer Gliding Squadrons.

With ideal conditions, they were launched into the air in Viking Gliders using a ground-based pulley system. Each student completed two flights, with many even taking control mid-air, which proved to be a memorable moment. Fleur and Alice (Lower Sixth) shared: “Despite the early start, we all thoroughly enjoyed our time gliding – the feeling of being over a thousand feet up and in control of an aircraft was exhilarating. Our experience with the flight simulator at school and knowledge from CCF really helped us understand the controls. It was a great way to spend a Saturday!”

Balancing adventure with academic dedication, the students even managed to fit in some A Level Chemistry revision between flights, displaying impressive commitment.

Parents also shared in the excitement, with one expressing their gratitude: “Thank you for all the support you continue to give our daughter. She loves CCF and the flight simulator and her confidence has grown immensely. She came home delighted and full of enthusiasm after Saturday’s gliding experience.”

For some, this marks the start of an exciting journey in aviation. Rekha (Lower Sixth) said: “It was a fantastic day, and I look forward to more practice on the flight simulator as I continue my flying journey. Thank you for taking us!”

This unforgettable day at RAF Syerston blended skill, discovery and joy.

On Sunday, the whole CCF cohort joined their colleagues for Bedford School to participate in a moving remembrance service and parade.

Remembrance Sunday is always an important date in the national calendar as we honour those who have served their country. Our students stood proudly as they represented BGS at our annual service. They were dignified and recognised the sacrifices that men and women have made for their nation.
