BGS’ rowing teams achieved a string of incredible results before half term (Friday 27th May and Sunday 29th May) at the National Schools Regatta at Dorney Lake.
On the Friday the three Year 9 quad boats shone in Buckinghamshire, with the B boat claiming silver in the B category.
After coming second in the semi-final to qualify for the A final, the girls enjoyed a strong second half of the race to finish as runners-up. The C crew also raced in the B category, claiming a creditable fourth in the B final.
The A crew rowed fantastically well to finish third in the A category B final, placing them ninth overall in the country.
On the Sunday, it was the turn of the Year 11 and Sixth Form crews.
The Sixth Form quad finished third in their respective final, leaving them 24th overall in the country – a category which boasts many GB athletes.
The Year 11 C quad was unlucky to encounter equipment problems in the final, but they fought hard in difficult circumstances.
The Sixth Form double crew raced well in their final, battling the entire way down the course and finishing fourth in their final, to rank 32nd nationally.
The Year 11 A fours produced arguably their best performance to date, qualifying as the third fastest from the time trials. Qualifying from the semi-finals in style, the girls then delivered a mature performance in the A final to finish fourth nationally.
The Year 11 B fours got off to a flying start in the B final and held on bravely to bag a deserved bronze medal.
Miss Round, Head of Rowing at BGS, said: “It was such a fantastic year for Bedford Girls’ School rowing, arguably the most successful one yet.
“I've never come away from an event feeling as proud as I did, seeing our fantastic rowers competing excellently at a high level.”
