On Friday 26th of May, a group of seven Lower Sixth English Literature students travelled to London, accompanied by staff, to see Shakespeare’s Othello.
After a hot journey down to East Aldgate, we located the beautiful Wilton's Music Hall and our balcony seats. We were blown away with the performance - it was beautifully minimalistic in terms of the set, which allowed full focus on the play itself in a way that felt very 'classically Shakespeare' - it was so refreshing to see something that wasn't dependent on set or costume to convey the sheer magnitude of feeling that Othello holds.
The director Richard Twyman added a fresh take to the production, and revealed how pertinent the themes Othello raises are in today's society by portraying him as a Muslim rather than Christian, giving an even greater resonance to the production.
Coming away, we were all awed at the power and human rawness that Othello revealed - not only did it supplement our learning, but provided us with a hugely educational experience as a whole.
