The Senior School Eco Club has been busy planting and tending to three plots out the back of Burnaby House, where we have been growing a variety of fruit and vegetables. Building on the success of last year’s crop, we have asparagus, sweetcorn, squashes, broad beans, borlotti beans, strawberries, courgettes, rocket, radishes, beetroot, leeks, carrots, as well as a range of herbs.
In our greenhouse we are also growing tomato plants which will be ready for harvesting next week. All the fruit and vegetables grown are included as ingredients in the various dishes served by The Green Kitchen during lunch service.
This work is all part of the Soil Association Food for Life Bronze Award and aims to raise awareness of where our food comes from and the importance sourcing of local and seasonal produce amongst our school community.
In addition, we will be welcoming a representative from the Soil Association on Monday 12th June, Sian Creagh-Osborne, the Food for Life Awards Programme Officer. Sian will be having a tour of the school and will be joining us for lunch to try the wonderful range of meals we have on offer.
