A Fitting Tribute to Joan Gibson

Our annual lacrosse match between the First XII and Old Girls’ team on Thursday 7th September was once again a huge success.

The match held at Cople Fields, paid a special tribute to Miss Joan Gibson (Gibby) who sadly passed away on 27th March 2017, aged 97. Joan was a hugely respected Head of PE at Bedford High School from 1951-1972, where she instilled a love of lacrosse in so many. Miss Gibson was a successful lacrosse player herself. She played goalkeeper for Wales and later captained the Welsh side.

We were delighted to have many friends and family from BGS and the wider community in attendance including Joan’s niece Mrs Sarah Brown. Mrs Bullerwell opened the lacrosse match with a special speech, paying tribute to Joan and the BGS community.

The Old Girls’ team included former Head Girl Anna Hunt, sisters Aimee Oakley and Elena Salmon, as well as Kate Axford and Katie Parrish both of whom hold international caps in Lacrosse for England and Wales respectively. The match was enjoyed by all with the Old Girls’ claiming victory 15-8. Mrs Sarah Brown presented the Player of the Match trophy to Georgia Staroscik (Lower Sixth), who gave an excellent goalkeeping performance for the First XII.
