We are thrilled to announce that Bedford Girls’ School has been ranked as the 7th best all-girls’ independent day school for sport in 2024 by School Sport Magazine.

This achievement highlights our students’ dedication to sport across a wide range of disciplines and places BGS among the top independent schools in the country. Competing alongside schools with specialist programmes and sports scholarships, this ranking reflects the strength of our sporting ethos.

In the overall standings, which include boys’, girls’, mixed, day and boarding schools, BGS ranked 54th, showcasing the commitment and talent of our community on a national scale.

Notable achievements include the England Hockey U16 Tier 1 Plate Runners Up title, with the team losing 5-3 to Sutton Valence in the final. The U14 Badminton Team came one round away from the National Finals, while the U13A and U14A Lacrosse teams finished in the Top 15 at the National Schools Lacrosse Championships. The U12A and U13A Netball Teams both reached the 3rd Round of the National Schools Netball Cup. Additionally, the U19 ISHC Plate Hockey team emerged as champions.

Mrs Mason-McLeod, shared her thoughts: “As Director of Sport, I am pleased to share that we have achieved the position of 7th all-girls' independent day school for sport. This reflects the commitment, talent, and effort of our students, staff, and parents. It is encouraging to see the time and dedication our students put into training and competing result in this recognition.”

“At BGS, our aim is to help every student find a sport they enjoy, with the support of dedicated staff who encourage a lasting interest in physical activity. Our values are reflected in the achievements of BGS athletes, who develop their potential in sport and are inspired to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle long after school.

“I’m also thrilled about the exciting growth of girls' football here at BGS, with our teams competing in their first-ever competitive matches this year. Alongside this, it’s been fantastic to see students embracing new opportunities in gymnastics and table tennis, both of which have been introduced this academic year. These developments reflect our commitment to offering diverse opportunities and ensuring every student can find joy in physical activity.

“Thank you to everyone who contributes to this journey, together, we continue to make progress in sport at BGS.”

A big thank you to our dedicated PE department teaching and coaching staff, parents and very committed and talented students who have been instrumental in this achievement.
