After being ranked as the 7th best all-girls’ independent day school for sport in 2024 by School Sport Magazine last week, we are delighted to share that BGS has been named ‘School of the Year’ for Bedfordshire in the LTA Awards 2024. This recognition celebrates the dedication of our teachers and coaches in developing an inclusive tennis programme for students across the school.

Tennis is a key part of life at BGS, with lessons offered from Years 3 to Upper Sixth as part of both the curriculum and our co-curricular activities. To prepare for the summer term, we host a pre-season coaching day for all students, supported by coaches from Riverside Lawn Tennis Club, a longstanding and valued partner of the school.

Last year, we took part in the LTA Schools Youth Competitions for Years 7 and 8, as well as Years 9 and 10, reaching the regional first round in both events.

Students have access to private coaching during free periods or lunchtime in the summer term, and our senior players support junior practices, acting as mentors and role models. In the past, several students have earned their Part 1 coaching qualification and are now actively coaching younger players.

Competitive tennis is an important feature of the calendar, with Saturday fixtures regularly involving over 80 players across home and away matches. Students also participate in tournaments organised by our partnership group, and this year, we are entering the new U14 and U16 events introduced by School Sports Magazine.

The School Tennis Championships are a highlight of the year, bringing together players from Years 3 to Upper Sixth. The younger years compete using red, orange, or green balls, ensuring a fun and inclusive experience for all.

Our partnership with Riverside Lawn Tennis Club continues to strengthen, with students attending early morning coaching sessions throughout the year. Starting at 7.10 am, these sessions provide an opportunity to train before the school day begins. During the summer term, students in Years 3 and 4 have their lessons on the school’s 12 Astro courts.

Mrs Mason-McLeod (Director of Sport) said: “This award is a wonderful reflection of the hard work and enthusiasm of our students, staff and Riverside coaches. We are proud of the inclusive and supportive environment we have created, ensuring every student has the opportunity to develop their skills and enjoy tennis.”

We are proud to receive this recognition and are excited to build on these achievements as we look ahead to the Regional Finals.
