On Friday 7th December, 32 excited girls from Years 7 and 8 set out very early to catch the plane to Germany for the Cologne Christmas markets.

On arriving in Cologne, the girls went straight to the cathedral market to get started on their shopping. After lunch in a typical German restaurant, the girls enjoyed the Time Ride virtual reality trip to Cologne in 1912.

Then it was time for the much-anticipated visit to the Lindt Schokoladenmuseum, where we saw how chocolate is made and enjoyed some delicious wafers dipped in the famous chocolate fountain.

On Saturday, after a quick tour of the cathedral, the girls enjoyed an interactive fragrance experience at the Farinahaus, the home of the original ‘eau de Cologne’, and visited the sparkling Christmas department in the Galeria Kaufhof. In the late afternoon, it was time to head to the airport for our return flight, all shopped out but with a better understanding of German Christmas traditions and culture.

Esther Peñacoba Lievano (Year 8) said: “The food was amazing. I really enjoyed going to the markets and buying lots of Christmas presents for my family. The cathedral was beautiful and I loved smelling and guessing all the different perfume ingredients at the Farinahaus.”
