Miss Dawson (Biology Teacher, CAS & Service Coordinator)
The Lower Sixth Campaign Challenge is now drawing to a close after four weeks of activities and events.
The challenge began with a period of research, planning and surveying the community to identify myths and misconceptions about each social issue, which enabled the groups to produce a targeted and effective campaign. The campaign then ran for four weeks, beginning with a Senior School assembly where each group had one minute to explain why they had chosen their issue and why it was important in both the BGS and wider communities.
A wide range of topics were represented, from male domestic violence to living a zero waste lifestyle, and the demonstration methods were equally diverse, from social experiments and sculptures, to more subtle campaigns such as the silhouettes used to highlight child neglect.
This challenge has been a great opportunity for the Lower Sixth girls to stand up for a social issue of their choice and to show creativity as well as continuing to develop the key professional skills of teamwork, leadership and public speaking, which are so important in further education and employment.
Teenagers, such as Amika George of the Free Periods campaign who began campaigning about period poverty at 17 years old, are showing that they have a voice and can make a difference to government legislation. We hope our Lower Sixth girls have been inspired to continue their campaign after the challenge finishes this week.
