At the end of the Spring Term (Thursday 28th March), parents, friends, teachers and students were invited to view Catherine Monk’s IB Visual Arts Exhibition.
The exhibition forms an important part of the IB Visual Arts course and provides a platform for students to showcase the final product of their art-making processes.
Catherine reflected on her exhibition, she said: “My exhibition aims to communicate the ‘journey’ I have been on since arriving in the UK in 2017 from Spain: growth, self-discovery and confessional, are terms that I would use to explain the works in my exhibition. Inspired by Tracey Emin and Frida Kahlo (British and Mexican female artists respectively), the artworks reveal my feelings, perceptions and revelations.
“My art is personal. The exhibition is the result of my own explorations and interpretations of issues such as mental health and feminism. On selecting work for my exhibition, I was made to consider two things: the ‘personal impact’ of revealing myself to unknown viewers and how the audience, with their different conceptions, would understand the art? Emotive and ambiguous, I have tried to encourage the audience to engage.”
