On Thursday 4th July, the Year 9 historians embarked on a thought provoking and poignant two-night residential trip to the memorial sites of Ypres and Somme in Belgium. Here are some student reflections from the visit:
Rebecca Turner
“I was really looking forward to the Ypres trip and I’m really glad it lived up to my expectation. At the first cemetery, I could not comprehend that actual men experienced these horrifying events. I still feel like it’s a story, but I know from texts and photos that it was real. I felt very emotional walking through the cemetery, as there was so many headstones. I found the tour immensely interesting and heartfelt. The facts were devastating, but I understand now what happened.”
Jasmine and Jess
“This trip has definitely opened our eyes to the reality of World War One. We have both been shocked and moved by this trip, it has taught us a lot. It was very emotional seeing all the graves, as it put into perspective how many people lost their lives. The visit made us realise how lucky we are and thankful for the soldiers that fought for our country. We can’t imagine what the soldiers went through and it was surreal to see the trenches and battle fields. This trip was really educational, it made us realise how brave these soldiers were.”
