Mrs Morgan (Senior School Eco Co-ordinator)
Now Autumn has arrived the Eco Club have been busy harvesting all the fantastic fruit and vegetables from the Green’s Kitchen Garden, which had been growing over the past few months.
This year we had a bumper crop of tomatoes and potatoes, benefitting from a good mix of wet and sunny, warm weather over the summer holidays, plus also an abundance of herbs (chives, parsley and coriander) and squashes – although we are saving the pumpkins for Halloween later this month. All the produce goes on to be used as ingredients for school lunches by our Catering team, so truly seasonal and as local as you can get.
The Green’s Kitchen Garden started back in 2016 and has gone from strength-to-strength. Each year we experiment with different varieties to find out what works well. Not only has the project generated lots of tasty food, it has also brought an opportunity for us to enjoy some relaxing time away in a quiet corner of the school, chatting amongst ourselves and listening to the resident birdlife as we dig.
Gardening can bring so many benefits in terms of our wellbeing, both mentally and physically, and it seems fitting this week on Mental Health Awareness Day, that we do encourage more of the school community to get involved and get growing!
