Sixth Form Careers

On Thursday, we welcomed alumna Kate Gibbons (1977) into school this week to help her mark her special birthday milestone. Kate’s parents were in the RAF and she began her schooling here as a boarder in Howard House, and after not visiting for 42 years thoroughly enjoyed a tour of both the Junior and Senior Schools.

Kate concluded her visit with an engaging Lunchbox Lecture on Law and Leadership, speaking both candidly and humorously about her journey to be becoming one of the first female partners in a City law firm. Kate revealed she was not an organised child but worked hard to develop this attribute in herself, reaping the benefits in her educational journey. She also urged girls to follow their interests and to study the subjects they enjoy. As an employee, Kate talked about good working relationships and the importance of being inspired by those around you. Kate is Global Knowledge Development Partner at Clifford Chance. At one point, the firm had three female partners who were all alumnae, which is quite incredible.

At the end of the session, Kate and her audience enjoyed some birthday cupcakes and (elderflower!) fizz.

Jasmin Chambers (Upper Sixth) said: “Today’s lecture was an exciting opportunity for prospective law students or those interested in leadership especially as it was given by a former pupil. Mrs Gibbons’ description of her career inspired all of us to stay determined despite obstacles, such as being a female in a male dominated profession.”
