Mimi Hollywell-Rolfe (Year 10)
Before the half term break, Year 10 students studying English had an amazing opportunity to see Arthur Miller’s classic tale of passion and betrayal, A View from the Bridge, at the Royal & Derngate Theatre in Northampton.
We are the only class studying this classic play as part of the IGCE course, and it was a great opportunity to see the masterpiece live. The play is set in 1950s New York and follows the story of Eddie Carbone, his wife Beatrice, his niece Catherine and the surprise arrival of Beatrice's Sicilian cousins. As a group, we found it very helpful to really understand the story line and we can’t wait to do further work on the play.
Mrs Everitt (English teacher) added: “This production was excellent and true to the text, thanks to the discerning direction of York Theatre Royal's associate director, Juliet Forster. She made great use of space, placing the Italian immigrants frequently in the background, ready to build up to the moment when Eddie reports the presence of illegal immigrants to the Bureau and precipitating the tragedy that follows. The 'chorus'/narrator, Alfieri, framed the narrative beautifully, with increasing intensity in his diction. The central characters were convincing, and a pleasure to watch.”
